During this time every year, I walk into the market and see these amazing orange fruit stacked up glistening for me to pick them up and take them home. They are shiny and pretty and hard and I never have any idea what to do with them or really what they are.

They are persimmons.

They are awesome and you should learn to love them.

Every year they usually sit in a pretty bowl on my kitchen table as a centerpiece waiting until I can think of something to do with them. They sit and sit and sit. But I can never come up with anything. They kinda scare me.

But this year I actually tried them. I listened to Martha and boiled them until their sugars were melted to a almost candy like sweetness, paired with cinnamon and a zip of vanilla. I pureed them to a smoothy velvety texture, dunked my spoon into the blender and smiled. They were amazing. They taste like the holidays. A warm puree that is sweet, rich and spicy. The babes and I just stood there for a full 5 minutes, eating the mixture right out of the blender. Spoonful after spoonful. One for me, one for her.

Now I’m a goner. I’m hooked. I have now gone through 2 packs of these beauts and I am waiting for my third round.

Don’t make the same mistakes as I. Don’t be afraid.

They are seriously yummy.

Don’t wait, they are only here for a short time. Get them before they are gone.

don’t be scared, get right after them

pluck, slice and sprinkle

Persimmon + Cinnamon + Vanilla

6 organic fuyu persimmons [flat bottomed variety]
1-2 cups water, chicken stock or breast milk
sprinkle of cinnamon
1/2 tsp of vanilla

Preheat oven to boil. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Pluck green stems and leaves off of persimmons. Cut in half horizontally and place skin side down on baking sheet. Sprinkle with cinnamon and boil for 10-15 minutes. You may need to rotate tray so that all persimmons boil evenly. Let cool slightly.

Place persimmons in food processor or blender and add vanilla. This step may need to be done in batches. I added the vanilla to the first batch and then mixed it all together in the end. While blending, add water if needed in order to get a smooth consistency.

Take a big bite right out from the blender and enjoy the warm feeling of the Holidays.

Is amazing over yogurt or added to oatmeal.
