Easy and Healthy Cures for Baby Constipation
You have started solids with your little one, are trying new scrumptious recipes and having so much fun! There still might be more food on your baby then in your baby, but the process is there. You can give yourself a pat on your back because you are being a rock star mom!
And then it happens, your little one gets constipated.
You start to panic a little when you realize that you haven’t seem a poopy diaper in a couple of days and you can’t remember for the life of you when the last one was, mommy brain is still very real indeed. You yell down the hall at your husband asking him if he changed a poopy diaper lately and his response is ‘well…I think so, but I can’t remember when it was. Yestreday or maybe the day before. hmm..no maybe it was last week. Why? Does it matter?’. So you start to panic a little more.
Let me stop you right there from panicking. In almost all cases, constipation is very common when transitioning your little one from milk to solids and they are going to be just fine.
When you start to introduce new food to your baby, their poop is going to change dramatically, especially if they were only on breast milk. So get ready. They could go several days without going number 2, there might be pieces of undigested food in there and it is going to start smelling. You might be used to your little one going poop multiple times a day and then all of sudden they don’t go for several days. This is normal, as long as their poop is wet and squishy.
Signs of Constipation
- Your babies stool is hard and dry.
- Your baby cries when going poo.
- Your baby is unwilling to feed and generally unhappy.
- Your baby’s stomach is hard when you gently press down on it.
-
Your baby’s stool has blood in or on it.
Remember to always check with your doctor if you have any concerns w
Foods That Can Trigger Constipation
- Rice Cereal
- Bananas
- White flour, pasta or bread
- Cheese
- Yogurt
Easy Cures for Constipation
- Stop serving the items above and switch to foods with lots of fiber in them.
- Serve easy to digest Avocado and Sweet Potatoes.
- Switch to the ‘P’s – purees of Peaches, Prunes, Pears, Peas and Plums.
- Sprinkle a pinch of ground flax seed to any vegetable or fruit puree.
- Sip on some more water during the day. Aim for 2-4 ounces in the morning and evening. This is in addition to the breast milk, formula or milk you are already giving.
- Sit your little one in a warm bath to help them relax.
- Start doing baby circles with their legs. Place baby on her back and quickly move her legs in a circular direction.
Note – Most doctors will recommend giving your baby prune or pear juice to help with constipation, but since I don’t advice serving juice to your little one until after a year old, I would recommend trying the list above first.

Hi!
We have started solids nearly 2 weeks ago! And it’s going great! But I think my LO is constipated! I’ll stop the banana for a few days but I was wondering if I should just stick to the foods she has been eating (apple, pear, peas and carrots) rather than introducing new ones (avocado and sweet potato)? Thanks x
Hello Sarah,
Unfortunately, constipation happens when introducing anything new to your little ones system. Stick with what you are feeding her for a couple days and load up on the pears and peas. All foods that start with the letter P will help with constipation! Plums, Prunes, Pears, Peas, Peaches. You might also want to give her a couple oz of water (if she is old enough) to help flush her out. But yes, constipation it totally normal at this stage:)

Hi Michelle,
I’ve often heard that you shouldn’t give juice to infants, which I totally get. I was wondering though… when I’m making a puree, I often save the fruit juice/steamed water combo that remains after the steaming process, and put it away in the fridge as a ‘juice’ for my daughter to drink later. I think it of it as a more natural component, and also lending well to eliminating waste, in a sense. What do you think? Does this fall under "no juices for infants" or does that just apply to shelved juice at the store? Thanks!
Hello Samantha,
Yes, the ‘no juices for infants’ is regarding the juices you find at the store. They are all filled with sugar and processed so much there is little to no nutritional value left in them. I only do store bought cold pressed juices and juices I make at home for my daughter and then lots of water and milk. I have never heard of using the water from the steamer. As long as you wash your veggies and fruits really well, I think this is a great idea! I am not sure how old your little one is but I would say any baby over 9 months can have some water everyday, especially in the summer when it is hot out. Do you mix them together (some veggie water mixed with fruit water) or do you just give her what you have on hand? I am really interested in this and want to know more!

Hi Michelle,
My daughter is 11 months old, but I’ve been giving her a little juice from the steamer since she was about 6 or 7 months. I do make sure to wash the fruits/veggies really well first 🙂
I mostly juice save the steamer juice from fruit purees (what I pour out before we chop)… the apple juice is great, and even the fruit combos like mango/apple/strawberry taste delicious! Tropicana has nothing on us 🙂
I usually just pour it from the batch of whatever I’m making right into the bottle, and store it in the fridge to chill. We should try veggies soon!
Hello Samantha,
I love this idea!!! I will try it out the next time I steam fruit. I think broccoli water/juice might be a little tough for baby, but you never know, most of the time the little ones surprise us!

To make pear juice for an infant (Dr recommended), I am using organic pears, do you suggest that
a) I peel them?
b) cook them?
Before blending and straining.
Thanks for your advice!
I would just use unpeeled pears before blending and straining as you will get more fiber in the juice.
Thanks for sharing this idea! My baby has to have juice every day to stay regulated unfortunately. Never thought to make it myself I just buy the 100% apple juice. I’m try this!
My 5 month old hasn’t poop for almost a week now. I suspect because of the bananas I gave. But she’s just feeling normal, not irritable, not straining to poop, she’s still feeding breastmilk well.. Hmm. Should I introduce her to water or pear juice for her to poop? Help please.
You can offer small amounts of water and 100% pear or prune juice to get things flowing. Also, tummy massages always helped with my babies constipation.
