When I first started making baby food, I used the blender that I had in my pre-baby days. You know the one, the one that looked cute on the counter and was efficient at making smoothies and more then its far share of margaritas. So I wasn’t entirely shocked when I blew the motor in a little over a month by making an extreme amount of baby food.
My old blender just wasn’t designed to handle that much pureeing. Not to mention I had to add an excessive amount of water to each of the purees in order for it to handle braking down the food to a smooth consistency.
Then a friend suggest I look into getting a Vitamix, raving how amazing it is. I went online and almost feel out of my chair at the price. Really? People pay that much for a blender. A blender?
But one night, when the little one decided she wasn’t going to sleep, which meant I wasn’t going to sleep, I broke down and pushed the send button and my Vitamix was on its way. My most expensive piece of kitchen equipment.
Turns out, I don’t know what I would do without it now. Most expensive but most worthwhile kitchen gadget.
This blender rocks. It can make pretty much make anything for you. Almond Milk or Almond Butter? Yup. The perfect Smoothy or Juice? You betcha. Pancake mix? No problem. Over 1000 ounces of baby purees? Yes. A weekend where you can get all of your errands done, get a pedicure that doesn’t get chipped and have some alone time? Sorry sista, not a chance.
My lesson for you, is that sometimes you have to pay some money for things that will actually last and that you will actually use.
But that doesn’t mean that there is not a slew of other blenders that are just as effective at making baby purees. Above is a list of the most positively review blenders that are also on the consumer search best blender list, in all price ranges.
People ask me if they should just skip the blender and get a Beaba, Baby Brezza or a Baby Bullet. My opinion is that you should skip the baby food maker/blender and just get a real blender. You will be amazed what you will make in a nice blender. I also find that the baby food maker/blender limits the amount of options you have for cooking the produce and what consistency you get. And as you know by now, I love to mix up how I make my purees based on the best possible flavor outcome. If you already have a great blender, and still want a baby food maker/blender, go ahead. I am sure you have space way up high in your pantry to store it.

I love your blog. In fact, I have a crush on it. 😉 Thank you so much for posting all of this valuable information! I have a question about making food in the same blender that you make other foods in your home.
I happen to have celiac disease (fancy word for wheat/rye/barley/oat intolerant) and something that I worry about and educate people on is the idea of "cross contamination". In other words, that pots and pans you cook your gluten free food in that have also had non-GF things cooked in, can get you sick. I know as parents, we get specific baby bowls and spoons for baby, especially when introducing new foods.
Going with that concept — would you say this should be a worry when preparing baby food in a blender? Does baby need a separate blender for allergy purposes? Just curious your opinion on the matter. Especially since I recently tried giving my baby sweet potatoes and she got a rash. BOO. 🙁 It makes me even more uptight about how I choose to cook and prepare foods for her now.
Hello Katie,
Thank you so much for crushing on my little blog!! 🙂 I am so glad you found it and have been making your own baby food! First of all, don’t give up on the sweet potatoes just yet. It might just be that she is not ready for sweet potato puree yet, so give it a couple weeks and try again. It took until my little one was almost 11 months before she could have chicken puree in anything.
This is a great question about the blender and I just put on my list to do a post on how to sterilize everything while making baby food (boy will that be a sexy post!!). So sorry to hear that you have such an extreme case of celiac disease 🙁 I know several people with it and while some of them are fine cooking and being around wheat a couple others can’t come within 10 feet of it without getting extremely sick (truly my heart goes out to you). As far as the blender goes, I would say as long as you clean it VERY WELL before and after each use, you will be fine. With that said, most blenders you have to take everything apart and wash separately in either the dish washer, your sink filled with very hot and soapy water or in a large pot of boiling water on the stove. The key is to twist off the bottom and take it all the way apart. My old blender had 4 different pieces that I had to clean. Also, make sure to air dry all pieces on clean dish towels. This is one of the reasons why I am such an advocate for my amazing Vitamix blender, it only comes in one piece and is super easy to clean on a daily biases and to deep clean. Only having one piece means you don’t have any bacteria growing between all the different parts.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
XOXO
Michele

Thank you so much, Michele! I will be sure to try the sweet potatoes at a later time. Your chicken story gives me hope that they aren’t "out" forever, as I love them so much myself! I tried pears and she had the same reaction — a rash on her tummy and back. Boo. I wonder how normal this is? Maybe it’s too soon to be introducing new foods? I’m not sure. So far, bananas are our only "go to". I ran to the store today and bought more organic veggies and fruits, including avocado, in hopes that something else will go over well. Next up is avocado!
I definitely think I’ll be investing in the Vitamix Blender. Thanks so much for the tips! It makes the most sense to me and you won me over with it being easy to clean/deep clean + not having to worry as much about bacteria!
Looking forward to your future posts, including the one about sterilizing! Yes, sexy post. HAHA! Thanks also for the celiac love. Believe it or not, it’s not so bad once it becomes your "norm". I make the best of it! 🙂
So sad that she is having reactions to both sweet potatoes and pears, as those are so low on the allergy index. How old is your little one? And how did the avocado and other veggies and fruits go? Maybe try hard boiled egg yolk and see how she does with those.
It’s hard to spend that kind of cash on a blender, but really it is worth it. I use my vitamix every day and would spend that much again in a heart beat if I need another one.
XOXO,
Michele
