Me: “Hey Ellie, what do you want for Breakfast?”

Ellie: “Trail mix”

M: “Ellie, it’s 7:15 in the morning, you can’t eat trail mix for breakfast?’

E: “Why?”

M: “You need something healthy that is going to fill you up until lunch. It also needs a fruit or veggie in it.”

E: “Why?”

M: “So, what do you want?”

E: “Trail mix”

M: 🙄 “Fine, whatever. But you need to have a smoothie with it as well”

E: “Why?”

This is the conversation I have with Ellie every-single-meal-of-the-day! I’m not even sure why I ask her anymore, cuz I know what the answer is going to be.

The truth is, trail mix is a great option for an on-the-go snack or a treat in a lunchbox, especially when you make it yourself. Healthy trail mix is filled with healthy fats, protein and essential vitamins and minerals.

Bonus, making your own trail mix is beyond easy! It’s a measure and stir kinda recipe.

It is also a fun recipe for the kiddos to help make. They can help measure out the nuts and dried fruit and then mix the trail mix (with their hands!) before serving themselves a fun snack.

Making your own trail mix is also a healthy (and cheaper) option then buying the pre-made mixes because you get to pick your own ingredients. This means you can limit the amount of sugary yummies that are in it and add/not add salted nuts depending on what you like.

Because trail mix is higher in calories and my kiddos will eat mass quantities of the stuff, I like to put a 1/4 cup measuring cup in our trail mix container so I know how much they are eating.

I usually get all of my nuts, seeds and dried fruit in the bulk bins of my grocery store, but I just found this amazing company called Thrive Market that has Whole Foods Products at Costco prices! You can save up to 50% off your favorite natural and organic products. Check out their amazing selection (and prices) of your favorite foods and kids products!
